• 1 {{ This was an exciting project, as the book had not been reprinted since 1983. A new preface was written by Sam Shepard, and another tour participant, T Bone Burnett, wrote a new foreword.
  • 2 {{ This title was about actual size on the letterpress. I scanned over 100 titles for the short chapters.
  • 3 {{ Weaving text and ornaments through the photography was a nice balancing act.
  • 4 {{ I didn't always know what I would do with the type before I printed it. Moving it and scaling it digitally let me play a bit more than I could on press.
  • 5 {{ Of course, I loved blowing up the texture when I could. Big letters are so beautiful.
  • 6
  • 7 {{ Many of the chapters are interludes of inner dialogues or poetry.
  • 8 {{ Of course, having a great subject and great photos to work with helps.

Rolling Thunder

Book design & letterpress

Winner: Best in Show, AIGA's Best of New England Show 2005

This book is a re-issue of a tour journal written in 1976 by Sam Shepard about Bob Dylan's Rolling Thunder tour through New England. 39 new photographs by Ken Regan were the main focus. HCd and DeCapo – the publisher – agreed that a vintage, road show look of letterpress should be used prominantly. J typeset 100 chapter titles and scanned them digitally for the layout. Smears and other inconsistencies were used as graphic elements to help visually divide the short chapters, and to add to the gritty feel.
