Don Smith New Work

Don is a retired educator and now full time painter/writer. He asked us to design a booklet for his upcoming solo exhibition at the Newport Art Museum. Clarity and simplicity were needed to let the work stand on its own. The type plays with the paintings a little, but for the most part, stays in the backseat while the paintings float in a sea of white. The work also exists on the page at scale – that is, the small paintings are reproduced small, and larger paintings get larger within approximate scale. This way, the intimacy of the smaller work is not lost, and the larger work still looks grand in comparison.
